The new horror film canon (and where to stream it)

For people with a lively interest in cinema’s rapid technolgical and cultural evolution over the past few decades, few areas are as fascinating as the horror genre. Just a few decades ago, horror films were mostly considered disreputable and schlocky. The field was dominated by cookie-cutter sequels full of masked slashers and low-rent monsters, and while many actors of note started out in horror, few willingly stayed there if they could get more prestigious work. Directors were another thing entirely, with a handful of dedicated genre enthusiasts, […]

Heidi Klum is the queen of Halloween, and this year, she’s truly outdone herself. According to a complaint filed in the New York Supreme Court on Tuesday, Sabbat was paid $45,000 […]

First teaser of Henry Cavill in ‘The Witcher’ inspires glorious memes

Netflix dropped a Halloween surprise by releasing a very brief first look at Justice League star Henry Cavill in the TV adaptation of The Witcher video game. But the real journey was not the 10 seconds of footage with no dialogue — it was the memes we made along the way. Cavill has the thankless job of being the live-action embodiment of a video game character. Which, in the case of Geralt, means wearing the most 1995 Dungeons and Dragons wig you’ve ever seen on a human […]

And they’re not being replaced by younger builders. […]

The backlash to streamer with a ‘god complex’ reveals a big Twitch taboo

Last weekend, a TwitchCon panel dedicated to helping new streamers refine their channels minted a new villain in the eyes of the Twitch community, thanks to a short viral clip on Twitter. In the footage, an audience member tells a panel that she wants to feel like she has a relationship with Twitch streamers. A streamer responds by saying he never wants that with his viewers and, more damningly, that he doesn’t think viewers should relate to him because he’s “better” and “bigger” than the average person. The anger arose after The New York Times revealed last week that Google had paid millions of dollars in exit packages to male executives accused of harassment and stayed […]

What should I do with my broken kettle?

Image caption Almost none of the kettles we can currently buy are designed to be repaired and re-used My kettle, that has given sterling service for several years, appears to be hankering after retirement. It’s a situation most of us are familiar with. If not the kettle, you’ll have found yourself with another appliance – an iron, blender, hairdryer or electric shaver – that’s reached the end of its useful life; not to mention all the electronic devices we now have littering our homes, but what to […]
